Roots in Karelia

The Rocklin family roots are deep in Karelia. My grandparents on both sides were born there as were all known previous generations.

This area has been under Russian rule & occupation since 1944.

Some 410,000 Karelian people were forced to evacuate from their ancestral lands to other parts of Finland. Unable to grow roots in places where they were often not welcomed by the Finns who had little understanding or compassion for them, many chose to emigrate to North America.
Our family is one of them.

We are a people who have adapted and built new lives in Canada.

Today we call ourselves proud Canadians with roots in Karelia  Karjalan vaakuna

The Karelian coat of arms symbolizes the age old battles that were fought
by the Swedes from the west and the Russians from the East.
The left arm and dagger represents Sweden and the right one represents Russia.
The battles between these superpowers often occurred on Karelian soil.

The Rocklin family ancestral lands are in Jääski right beside the Vuoksi river.
Past and present pictures will be posted on these pages soon.
