This area has been under Russian rule & occupation since 1944. Some
410,000 Karelian people were forced to evacuate from their ancestral lands to
other parts of Finland. Unable to grow roots in places where they were often not
welcomed by the Finns who had little understanding or compassion for them, many chose to emigrate to North America.
We are a people who have adapted and built new lives in Canada.
